On October 2, the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL®) inaugurated its Brussels training campus and headquarters for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region in the presence of more than 100 guests from business and industry. The event, ‘A Day for Change’, featured a programme of speeches and workshops.
An introductory address by CCL Chairman Ingar Skaug, outlined the problems posed by globalisation and sustainability, as well as a growing distrust in leaders. The business environment, however, is evolving: by 2020 two out of three graduates will be women.
Alison Maitland, co-author of the book ‘Future Work’, then illustrated the practical challenges that will face the business community. The new CCL complex reflects many of the findings of this book, notably its ‘open space’ architecture allied with areas dedicated to creative thinking and reflection.
The next speaker was US Ambassador Howard Gutman who paid tribute to the host country, noting that the Belgian public’s perception of the United States had shown a radical and positive shift since the late-2000s, with a trend from only eight per cent favourable just five years ago to 45 per cent favourable today.
The morning session concluded with an address by Chief Learning Officer at Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), Ignacio de la Vega.
The afternoon session took the form of two sets of parallel workshops focusing on different aspects of the challenges facing future business leaders. One of these workshops featured work in the field of the neurosciences: people are only beginning to comprehend the role of the brain in shaping qualities like leadership. One of the better understood psychological factors is the greater impact of negative judgments and experiences over positive ones.
‘A Day for Change’ wound up with a ‘surprise session’ drum circle, followed by a reception hosted by CCL President and CEO John Ryan. The new CCL® learning campus is located at Rue Neerveld 101 - 103 Neerveldstraat, B-1200 Brussels, Belgium.
