Belgium meets the Kyoto objective

Date: 25/01/2010 09:50:00

Belgium successfully managed to reduce its carbon emissions by 8.3%.

On January 19, Paul Magnette, the Federal Minister for Energy and Climate, was informed that Belgium accomplished its objective in reducing its carbon emissions as assigned by the Kyoto protocol.

Since 1990 Belgium successfully managed to reduce its carbon emissions by 8.3% when the required objective was to be 7.5%. Magnette indicated that the principal sectors that contributed to this success were the Industrial and Energy sectors.

However he anxiously indicated that both the Transport and Building sectors failed to decrease their levels of emissions. The transport sector now represents 20.4% of all Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GGE) in Belgium. These figures require urgent action according to Magnette, who henceforth hopes to coordinate his work with the ministers responsible for transport and initiate some political coordination in their work related to the development of public transport.

The legally binding Kyoto agreement quota was first established in 1990 for all Member State of the European Union to tackle the issue of Global Warning and GGE.
